Over the past weeks, there was massive media coverage concerning the Conficker worm. Some of these reports were full of speculation and scary messages about its effects. But what can "everyday users" like you and me do about all this? How should I react to all these messages? What exactly is Conficker? How can I protect myself?
Current malware threat situation
Many antivirus software manufacturers display the most recent threats on their Internet pages and provide them with a risk rating ("low" to "high" risk) based on their own assessment. The majority of viruses, Trojans and worms discovered by these manufacturers (McAffee, Panda, Sophos, Symantec and Trend Micro) in March were considered to be posing low to medium risks.

Microsoft is launching its new browser, Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), today. According to Microsoft, this will allow users to browse faster and more efficiently. In addition, it is said to offer more individuality, more security and improved data protection - i.e. privacy.
